Firing an Employee after 2 Week's Notice

An employee just gave me two weeks notice. Is there any reason under Massachusetts law that I can't just fire him now?  (Posted by Angryone on the Forum.)

Editor's Response:

The legal answer is no, not under Massachusetts law. However, for a variety of reasons, it may not be a good idea. For example, if work spreads through the organization that you fire employees after they give you the courtesy of a two week notice, other people will not give you that courtesy when it is time for them to move on.  Because the world of employment law is full of traps for the unwary, I always encourage employers to establish and maintain a relationship with an experienced employment law attorney.  Good luck.
